Shear Stress

Shear Stress is the intensity of force per unit area, acting tangent to dA. In other words, It is the stress component that acts in the plane of the sectioned area. Consider the effect of applying a force P, to a bar as shown in the figure on the left.

If the supports are considered rigid, and P is large enough, the material of the bar will deform and fail along the planes AB and CD.
